How Screenpipe works.

Core architecture

Screenpipe records your computer history on macOS, Windows and Linux—accessibility data first, screen frames with OCR as a fallback, and audio transcripts—and exposes it to any AI through a local API and MCP server.

Under the hood

Raw history stays on your machine by default; the Business plan adds cross-device sync. Continuous capture uses roughly 30 GB of disk per month and 0.6–4 GB of memory.

The honest trade-offs.

What Screenpipe does well

  • Local by default, with source code available.
  • Runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.
  • Open to developers through an API and MCP.

Where it breaks down

  • Records continuously

Always-on capture means heavy disk use and a lot to review, rather than saving only what you choose.

  • A building block more than a finished assistant

Much of its value comes from wiring it to your own AI tools.

  • No dictation

It does not type cleaned speech into your apps.

Tyne

Unlimited on-device dictation, free forever ($0). Plus is $4.99/month ($49/year); Turbo is $9.99/month ($95/year); Turbo Plus ($19.99/month) is coming soon.

Where Tyne differs.

Both keep your history local. Tyne saves what you choose—thoughts, meetings, documents and optional screen text purged after 15 days—into an encrypted vault.enc, and works out of the box: hold Fn to dictate, ⌥ Space to ask, Atlas for cited document answers.

On Turbo, Balanced mode is the default. Loom Turbo can process relevant note, document or screen content for supported answers and reports. Local Only keeps new request content on your Mac.

Questions

Screenpipe alternatives, answered plainly.

Is Tyne a free alternative to Screenpipe?

Yes. Tyne’s Free plan includes unlimited on-device dictation with no word cap. Tyne is currently invite-only, so you need to request beta access before installing it.

Does Tyne dictation work offline?

Yes. After the speech models are installed, dictation and cleanup run on your Mac. Local Only keeps new AI request content on your Mac; live web search and Loom Turbo cloud answers require a connection.

Does Tyne upload my voice recordings?

No. Raw dictation and meeting audio are transcribed on your Mac and are not uploaded. On Turbo in Balanced mode, selected text or an image can be sent for a supported cloud answer, but raw audio and the full vault stay on your Mac.

Should I choose Screenpipe or Tyne?

Screenpipe is a strong choice if you value local by default, with source code available. Tyne is designed for people who want system-wide Mac dictation plus encrypted local notes and a document workspace.
