How Mem works.

Core architecture

Mem builds a picture of your notes, tasks and projects. You capture with notes, a voice mode for meetings or thinking aloud, Push-to-Remember on Mac and Windows, a web clipper, WhatsApp or email, and connections to Gmail, Slack and Todoist.

Under the hood

Notes and context are stored and processed in Mem’s cloud. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, but not end-to-end encrypted. Notes can be exported as Markdown.

The honest trade-offs.

What Mem does well

  • An agent that keeps track of tasks and projects for you.
  • Many ways to capture, from voice to email and messaging.
  • Markdown export keeps your notes portable.

Where it breaks down

  • Cloud-stored, not end-to-end encrypted

Mem can technically access stored notes, and there is no local-only mode.

  • No offline answers

Search and AI answers depend on Mem’s servers.

  • Not a dictation tool

It does not type cleaned speech into other apps.

Tyne

Unlimited on-device dictation, free forever ($0). Plus is $4.99/month ($49/year); Turbo is $9.99/month ($95/year); Turbo Plus ($19.99/month) is coming soon.

Where Tyne differs.

Tyne gives you the same “say it, find it later” loop with the memory kept on your Mac. Say “log it” to file a thought under a project, ask with ⌥ Space, and keep everything in an encrypted vault.enc—plus dictation into any app.

On Turbo, Balanced mode is the default. Loom Turbo can process relevant note, document or screen content for supported answers and reports. Local Only keeps new request content on your Mac.

Questions

Mem alternatives, answered plainly.

Is Tyne a free alternative to Mem?

Yes. Tyne’s Free plan includes unlimited on-device dictation with no word cap. Tyne is currently invite-only, so you need to request beta access before installing it.

Does Tyne dictation work offline?

Yes. After the speech models are installed, dictation and cleanup run on your Mac. Local Only keeps new AI request content on your Mac; live web search and Loom Turbo cloud answers require a connection.

Does Tyne upload my voice recordings?

No. Raw dictation and meeting audio are transcribed on your Mac and are not uploaded. On Turbo in Balanced mode, selected text or an image can be sent for a supported cloud answer, but raw audio and the full vault stay on your Mac.

Should I choose Mem or Tyne?

Mem is a strong choice if you value an agent that keeps track of tasks and projects for you. Tyne is designed for people who want system-wide Mac dictation plus encrypted local notes and a document workspace.
