How ChatGPT for Mac works.

Core architecture

The ChatGPT Mac app gives you OpenAI’s models in a desktop window and an ⌥ Space chat bar. It offers Memories, Record mode for meetings (up to four hours, on paid plans), and an opt-in Computer History feature on Pro, Business and Enterprise.

Under the hood

Requests are processed on OpenAI’s servers. Computer History logs interaction events such as clicks, typing and app switches (no screenshots or audio), processes them on OpenAI’s servers, and saves the resulting memories on your Mac as plain Markdown files.

The honest trade-offs.

What ChatGPT for Mac does well

  • Access to OpenAI’s most capable models and agent features.
  • Record mode summarises meetings and voice notes.
  • A familiar chat experience across devices.

Where it breaks down

  • Cloud processing for everything

Conversations, recordings and Computer History events are processed by OpenAI in the cloud.

  • Local memory files are not encrypted

OpenAI documents that Computer History memories are stored on your Mac as unencrypted Markdown.

  • Not a dictate-anywhere tool

Voice input is documented for writing prompts inside ChatGPT, not for typing cleaned text into any app.

Tyne

Unlimited on-device dictation, free forever ($0). Plus is $4.99/month ($49/year); Turbo is $9.99/month ($95/year); Turbo Plus ($19.99/month) is coming soon.

Where Tyne differs.

Use ChatGPT for open-ended chat. Use Tyne for your own work: hold Fn to dictate into any app with on-device transcription, keep notes, meetings and documents in an encrypted vault.enc, and ask about them with ⌥ Space. In Local Only mode, nothing new leaves your Mac.

On Turbo, Balanced mode is the default. Loom Turbo can process relevant note, document or screen content for supported answers and reports. Local Only keeps new request content on your Mac.
