How Raycast AI works.

Core architecture

Raycast is a keyboard launcher for the Mac with built-in AI: Quick AI, Chat, Agents, AI Commands, Screen Awareness and Memory, plus a large extension store. Paid plans include system-wide dictation.

Under the hood

AI requests use cloud models by default. You can connect local models through Ollama, and those requests stay on your machine, though server-side tools such as image generation still go through Raycast.

The honest trade-offs.

What Raycast AI does well

  • A huge extension ecosystem and fast keyboard workflows.
  • Choice of many cloud models, bring-your-own-key on Pro, and local models via Ollama.
  • Speech to text anywhere on your system on paid plans.

Where it breaks down

  • Cloud by default

Unless you set up local models yourself, AI requests are processed by cloud providers.

  • Keyboard-first, not voice-first

Dictation is one feature among many rather than the centre of the product, with no voice cleanup tuned for self-corrections and filler.

  • No encrypted document workspace

There is no equivalent of an encrypted local vault with cited answers across your PDFs and spreadsheets.

Tyne

Unlimited on-device dictation, free forever ($0). Plus is $4.99/month ($49/year); Turbo is $9.99/month ($95/year); Turbo Plus ($19.99/month) is coming soon.

Where Tyne differs.

If you live in a launcher, Raycast is excellent. Choose Tyne when your voice is the main input: dictation and cleanup run on your Mac out of the box, everything you save goes into an encrypted vault.enc, and Atlas answers from your documents with the page or cell it came from.

On Turbo, Balanced mode is the default. Loom Turbo can process relevant note, document or screen content for supported answers and reports. Local Only keeps new request content on your Mac.

Questions

Raycast AI alternatives, answered plainly.

Is Tyne a free alternative to Raycast AI?

Yes. Tyne’s Free plan includes unlimited on-device dictation with no word cap. Tyne is currently invite-only, so you need to request beta access before installing it.

Does Tyne dictation work offline?

Yes. After the speech models are installed, dictation and cleanup run on your Mac. Local Only keeps new AI request content on your Mac; live web search and Loom Turbo cloud answers require a connection.

Does Tyne upload my voice recordings?

No. Raw dictation and meeting audio are transcribed on your Mac and are not uploaded. On Turbo in Balanced mode, selected text or an image can be sent for a supported cloud answer, but raw audio and the full vault stay on your Mac.

Should I choose Raycast AI or Tyne?

Raycast AI is a strong choice if you value a huge extension ecosystem and fast keyboard workflows. Tyne is designed for people who want system-wide Mac dictation plus encrypted local notes and a document workspace.
